River Hills Shopping Center
Birmingham, AL · Full-site LED conversion
An 813,000-square-foot regional center in Birmingham, Alabama, served by Alabama Power. Over three decades of operation, the exterior lighting infrastructure had aged significantly, creating both performance and cost challenges.
The Problem
The exterior lighting was a mix of CFL, incandescent, LED, and metal halide technologies. Some partial LED upgrades had been attempted, but the inconsistent mix of old and new technologies created uneven light levels and complicated maintenance scheduling.
The Approach
We completed the exterior retrofit in March 2021, standardizing the entire exterior lighting system on high-efficiency LED technology. Every remaining legacy fixture was replaced with a properly-spec'd LED equivalent, ensuring uniform illumination across the expansive parking fields and building perimeters.
The Results
$21,145 in total annual savings. Maintenance savings of $17,401 per year were particularly impactful — eliminating the patchwork of different lamp types and ballasts that had made servicing the property unnecessarily complex. The standardized LED system simplified future maintenance and improved nighttime visibility for shoppers.
